A Short Break
Get the family out of the house for a weekend in Taupō! You could pack in geothermal hot pools, cruising on the lake and a bike ride on the iconic Huka Trails.
Friday night – Drive to Taupō town on a Friday afternoon and check in for two nights’ accommodation at the amazing Lake Taupō Holiday Resort. Your accommodation includes full access to the thermal pool complex featuring a swim up bar and outdoor movie screen.
If it’s not too late, take a trip to the lakefront for a fish and chip sunset dinner and a family photo with the #LOVETAUPO sign. The epic view out across Lake Taupō to the majestic mountains of the UNESCO dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park makes quite the backdrop!
Enjoy a relaxing start to your day with breakfast at one of the many cafes either in the town centre or on the lake front.
Then head down to Taupō’s boat harbour to board your scenic cruise. Chris Jolly Outdoors will take you around the scenic bays of Lake Taupō out to the iconic Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings with an interactive and informative commentary along the way. The spectacular artwork stands 14-metres high and is only accessible by water. Take the perfect family portrait in front of these impressive carvings, before meeting the local wildlife as the ducks fly in for a snack. On the way back to the boat harbour the kids can learn the art of manoeuvring this impressive vessel directly from the skipper as he talks them through the skills required and may even let them take the helm!
Back in Taupō town, look at the vibrant street art lining the streets of the CBD with the Graffiato: Taupō Street Art Festival walking tour, by foot or electric scooter! Download the Graffiato: Taupō Street Art Festival walking tour map and check out a selection of 30 walls that show the wide breadth of colourful mural work within Taupō. The kids will have tonnes of fun getting their photo taken infront of these large-scale murals.
Head to Taupō DeBretts Thermal Spa. This evening will see you relaxing in thermal mineral waters as the kids play in the warm water playground and ride the water slides.
This morning visit the Wairakei Tourist Park with their range of activities to be experienced.
Collect your hire bikes or e-bikes from the team at Four B, grab a map and some recommendations and take to the trails that traverse the mighty Waikato River, known as the Huka Trails. An optional trailer is available for younger children!
If you plan to go as far as Aratiatia Rapids, make sure you time your ride to view the impressive dam release that takes place daily at 10.00am, 12.00pm and 2.00pm.
At the conclusion of your ride visit Huka Honey Hive with its range of honey, mead and cosmetic products and let the kids learn about the fascinating world of the honeybee.
