Couples SH35 Coast Adventure
Weekend
Nothing like a weekend away, exploring new places with your mate by your side – here’s a mini roadie over a weekend to see something and do something new!
Begin day one from Opotiki and slow down for a great venture along State Highway 35. Wind your way along scenic bays and sheltered coves for safe swimming, like the beautiful Maraehako Bay. Te Araroa is a must-see for the largest Pohutukawa tree in the world.
When it’s time to refuel, pop in at the East Cape Manuka Café before you tackle the spectacular walk up to the iconic East Cape Lighthouse. Bunk down at East Cape Campground or Hicks Bay Motel Lodge for the evening.
There’s no better way than to start your day than with a sunrise and atop sacred Maunga Hikurangi, the highest point on the East Cape and the first place in the world to see the sunrise.
Continue south to Tokomaru Bay, it’s known by locals as ‘the centre of the universe’. Check out the historic wharf and then settle in for dinner and a room at Te Puka Tavern; with million-dollar views of the vast Pacific Ocean, it will be hard to leave.
Start the next day with a hearty brunch (highly recommend the Paua Pie!) before heading off to Tolaga Bay Wharf for a stroll along NZ’s longest historic wharf. Don’t forget to pop in in Gisborne to top up your craft beers at Sunshine Brewery, or your wine rack with any of our cellar doors.
