Head out to the Whakarewarewa Forest after dark to experience the Redwoods Nightlights. The forest comes alive with designer lanterns, lit up platforms and swing bridges, and animated light shows across the ferns below.

Visit the world’s youngest geothermal system at Waimangu Volcanic Valley. The valley was created by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886, so there’s heaps of history to learn as you wander through the valley. The geothermal wonders include a bright blue crater lake and the world’s largest hot spring, as well as steaming cliffs, spouting geysers and bubbling streams.

Waikite Valley

A short drive from Waimangu Volcanic Valley will find you at the Waikite Valley Thermal Pools. The water in these pools comes straight from Te Manaroa Spring, make sure you take wander up the eco-trail to see the water bubbling out of the ground before relaxing in the thermal waters.

Pig and Whistle

The Pig & Whistle pub is a Rotorua landmark. Previously the city’s police station, now serving a range of craft beers and a great pub grub menu to keep the whole family happy – the pigtail fries are second to none!
