Waiouru to Ohakune

Journey Begins - Day 1

Then it’s off to Ohakune just 20 minutes along State Highway 49 to the famous carrot park where you can download the ‘Magical Park’ app on your phone or iPad where it will turn our carrot park into a digital fantasy land.

Head to Utopia Café for a spot of lunch which has a great kids menu.

Dinosaur House

In the afternoon you definitely want to head 10 minutes west to Raetihi, where you can visit theDinosaur House – a small dinosaur museum. See dinosaur skeletons, walk among life-size reconstructions including the always popular T-Rex and Spinosaurus, and learn about the enthralling world that they lived. It is not to be missed!

Head back to Ohakune to settle in to your accommodation, we recommend visiting Ohakune Top 10 Holiday Park, they have a range of accommodation options and a bed for every budget plus a playground for the kids.

For Dinner, you can grab some delicious options from the local New World Supermarket or for a night off cooking, head to one of our many restaurants or takeaways.

Our next stop will be to the amazing indoor climbing wall in National Park where the kids can unleash their inner monkeys.

If you haven’t had lunch yet, how about some hot chips and a lemonade followed by a round of mini golf at Schnapps.

35 minutes

Next its North to Taumarunui, where the afternoon can be spent cuddling a baby alpaca at Nevalea Alpaca Farm. Take an alpaca for a short walk down ‘Alpaca Lane’ or a guided tour including meeting a large group of our friendly alpacas, where you can get up close and have a cuddle with a cria (baby alpaca)!

There’s also the option to pop by Bradleys Garden to wander through the most beautiful gardens, a mischievous mini-putt golf course and a scrumptious afternoon tea.
