Relax in Ruapehu
Some gentle walking, tasty treats, shopping and exploring in the rejuvenating mountain air of Ruapehu district will certainly relax the body and recharge the mind!
Day 1 – Depending on what direction you are heading from, start your relaxing and awe inspiring Ruapehu two-day getaway in Ohakune and Raetihi. Grab a coffee and sweet treat from Angel Louise Café or the newly opened Thorn, then enjoy some of our awesomely unique shopping experiences. Some we recommend are Volcano Vibe, The Craft Haus and Strange Dog. You will not be disappointed by the unique items you can buy.
Once you have your local mementos, take a drive up State Highway 4 to the iconic Chateau Tongariro Hotel where you will check in for your evening of relaxation. Head downstairs for a decadent and pampering High Tea. There are lots of great spaces in this grand building for you to enjoy your fine tea, including sitting in front of the grand fireplace or in front of the Ngāuruhoe window.
Take a short stroll to walk off your high tea with the Whakapapa Nature Walk – a lovely family friendly 15-minute loop track beginning 250m above the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre. See examples of the unique alpine flora of Tongariro National Park from the sealed loop track. A series of information panels explain the various zones of vegetation in the park.
Before dinner, we recommend you enjoy the Two Hour Sunset Guided Walk with Adrift Tongariro. A superb way of experiencing the Tongariro National Park and enjoying this stunning time of day. This walk is also great if you would like to experience the volcanic terrain but have limited time or fitness for the more strenuous full day walks. You will be guided on a walk of approximately 60 – 80 minutes before selecting the ideal spot to enjoy a glass of New Zealand bubbles as you watch the sunset.
Before you crash for the night after your long day, grab some dinner in the Ruapehu.
Stay: Chateau Tongariro Hotel
Day 2 – Wake up refreshed and have some breakfast at your hotel. Then head up country to Taumarunui, where you can do a spot of shopping in the main street and head out to Lauren’s Lavender Farm. Located 15kms outside of Taumarunui on the historical “Forgotten World Highway” the lavender farm lies adjacent to the famous Whanganui River and offers you tranquil surroundings of lavender fields, farmland and bush. Have a coffee and a bite to eat while taking in the amazing scents of the fields of lavender.
We can’t leave out the alpacas at Nevalea Alpaca Farm, where there are a range of different activities to choose from – get up close to the alpacas and hand feed them! They have new-born baby alpacas all year-round, and for a unique opportunity offer visitors the chance to have a cuddle with a baby alpaca!
If you haven’t filled up on all the yummy food from the region, then how about some lunch at the Alpaca Farm before heading home.
Stay an extra night or two. Further explore the walks and trails of the region and meet the locals!
