Ruapehu Romantic Getaway
Ruapehu offers so much for an active romantic break away – hiking, biking, canoeing – what to choose? This suggestion gets you on the stunning Whanganui River for a few days, has you relax and recover in 5 star luxury before getting fesh mountain air in the lungs as you cycle along a piece of historic road.
Starting our romantic adventure in Raetihi, grab a canoe from Whanganui River Canoes where you can freedom hire to explore the Whanganui River at your leisure. It can be just the two of you so you aren’t with a large group. You will be on the river for 2-3 days and camping along the way in remote locations amongst stunning scenery. Make sure you pack well and bring a bottle of bubbly for the evenings.
Guided options available.
After some adventuring, let’s head to Ohakune for a coffee and bite to eat at the Blind Finch Bakehouse. Don’t miss the Chocolate Lahars!
Then on to Nightsky Cottage where you will experience true 5-star accommodation. The cottage is fully self-contained and furnished with European flair. There is a cozy wood fire, open plan lounge dining area with skylights for all day sun and night time stargazing and a fully equipped kitchen. A very special feature of the cottage is the bathroom, which features two side-by-side freestanding bath-tubs looking into the bush. It has a large walk-in shower and pedestal vanity units complimented by luxury bathrobes and homemade toiletries. There’s even a covered full width deck with outdoor furniture and a BBQ for lazy days taking in the beautiful surroundings, you might even see some deer wandering by. A short bush walk leads to a private decked picnic area with stunning views of Mt Ruapehu. Seclusion central to everything.
After a wondefully restful sleep in 5 Star comfort, head out on some bikes to take on the 15km ride of the Old Coach Road from Ohakune. The best way to tackle this ride is to shuttle to Horipito and bike back down the trail to Ohakune. Originally used by horse-drawn coach as a connecting route between the two rail heads of the unfinished North Island trunk line, the Ohakune Old Coach Road is steeped in history.
To finish the day before dinner, we recommend you enjoy the Two Hour Sunset Guided Walk with Adrift Tongariro. A superb way of experiencing the Tongariro National Park and enjoying this stunning time of day. This walk is also great if you would like to experience the volcanic terrain but have limited time or fitness for the more strenuous full day walks. You will be guided on a walk of approximately 60 – 80 minutes before selecting the ideal spot to enjoy a glass of New Zealand bubbles as you watch the sunset.
Back to your accommodation for one last night before you head on your next journey.
