Weekend begins

Taupō

Friday night – Taupō is home to several award-winning boutique accommodators and beautiful bed and breakfasts, perfect for your next weekend getaway. Check out Whakaipo Lodge, set amongst a country estate with farm animals and immaculate gardens, adjacent to the stunning Whakaipo Bay reserve, which offers fantastic winter walking and biking trials nestled around the shores of Lake Taupō.

Acacia Heights Gardens is a true place of tranquillity, set amongst beautiful gardens on a secluded two acres of tranquil gardens with views across Lake Taupō and the rural surrounds.

Saturday

On your bike!

You have a choice of incredible rides to explore today, pick one or explore several depending on your level of fitness – or hire an e-bike from FourB which is conveniently located at the Hub at Wairakei.

Craters Mountain Bike Park – discover more than 50km of trails at this purpose-built mountain bike park, located a short ride (or even shorter drive!) from Taupō town. Trails range from entry level to technical cross-country and grade 5 downhill trails. You will need to purchase a visitor pass from Bike Taupō.

Huka Trails – ride a network of trails that wind along the Waikato River, connecting Taupō town with Huka Falls, Aratiatia Dam, Wairakei Tourist Park and Craters Mountain Bike Park. Ride as little or as much as you like, up to 80km. Most sections of the Huka Trails are grade 1 – 2 easy, whilst parts are grade 3 intermediate.

If you are feeling hungry Kefi at the Hub is perfectly located on the Huka Trails and at the Craters Mountain Bike Park carpark for a post-ride treat.

Healing Waters

Wairakei Terraces

Complete your epic adventure and rest your tired muscles at Wairakei Terraces adults-only thermal hot pools. Surrounded by native bush and set below silica terraces and waterfalls, these thermal pools are rich in minerals and will have your body rested and rejuvenated for another day in the saddle.

Turangi

Take an incredibly scenic drive to Turangi, 40 mins south of Taupō town to explore the Tongariro River Trail (15km) an easy grade 2 mountain bike ride. Discover stunning native bush, rolling farmland, swing bridges, winding singletrack and lovely river views on this ride. This easy trail is a looped ride from Turangi town, with multiple entry/exit points and is perfect for all abilities. Bike hire and guides are available from Tongariro Mountain Bikes. The Tongariro River is world renowned for its trout fishing and the river trail is a window to this world.

Tokaanu

After your ride, visit Hare & Copper Eatery & Bar for a bite to eat – the newest addition to the dining scene in Turangi. Hare & Copper offer a range of delicious options for brunch and dinner, with shared plates a great option for groups.  Enjoy your meal in a beautiful setting at the old River Vineyard location.

Blessed with natural geothermal activity, the small southern village of Tokaanu offer up glorious, steaming hot pools and the perfect stopover after a day of adventure. The natural geothermal pools in this area have long been recognised as having wai ora (healing waters). Tokaanu Thermal Pools are great for the whole family, with both public and private bathing options available. The private, natural mineral pools are recommended before enjoying the large public pool that is heated with fresh chlorinated water.
