A Short Break

On the Lake

Take a scenic cruise around Taupō’s hidden bays, learning the Māori mythology and volcanic history of these special lands. Take the opportunity to hand feed the local wildlife before gently floating beneath the extraordinary 14-metre-high Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings. As you cruise back to the town centre, try your luck at trout fishing and see if you can land one of these local delicacies (Chris Jolly Taste of Taupō Scenic cruise only).

Lake to Plate


In New Zealand you cannot buy trout, so catching one yourself is the only way to enjoy freshly caught trout for dinner!

Once you have made a catch, call one of the divine local restaurants such as Vine EateryBistro LagoThe BistroPlateau Bar & Eatery or The Brantry to make a booking and a time to drop the fish in –they’ll prepare it for your evening meal. A truly Taupō lake to plate experience.

Taupō is world famous for its geothermal hot pools, so wind down with a hot swim at Taupō De Bretts Spa Resort. There’s even a spa on site so book in a massage if you have the time, and leave feeling completely revitalised for your next day in Taupō.


Great Lake Pathway

Enjoy a leisurely start to the day this morning take a stroll around the Great Lake Pathway,  with spectacular views across the lake to the mountains of the Tongariro National Park. If you are up early enough you may even see steam rolling off the water – a spectacular sight. The Great Lake Pathway trail begins at the Taupō Boat Harbour, where Redoubt Street meets Ferry Road. There are plenty of parking options along the length of the ride so you can start and finish the trail at any point you choose. Grade 1 easy, 1-10km.

Lava Glass

Enjoy lunch or well-deserved coffee at one of Taupō’s hidden secrets, Lava Glass Gallery and Café. Glass blowing is an incredible talent and you will have the opportunity to see one of the world’s master glass blowers at work, Lynden Over. Discover the famous Volcanic Series of glass art with its 20 landscape designs, inspired by the stunning landscapes of the central North Island. Take a stroll through the Sculpture Garden with more than 600 glass art sculptures on display.
