In central Hamilton, Waikato Museum makes learning fun. Inquisitive children of all ages will happily spend hours in total absorption in the Exscite interactive science gallery. The changing exhibitions bring the region’s stories to life, with a focus on the regions rich culture and engaging hands-on experiences.
If you’re looking for an exciting and educational experience, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Hamilton Zoo . You’ll find hours of fun exploring and meeting the wide variety of rare and endangered animals from around the world. “Meet the Keeper” sessions run daily and will leave the kids enthralled with trivia, and for those animal lovers who are eager for a close-up encounter, Face 2 Face tours are a unique behind the scenes experiences where you can learn more about the zoo’s incredible creatures.
For active family fun, a visit to Hamilton Gardens is a must-do activity. This free attractions tells the story of gardens through themed garden collections which explore different civilisations and historically important times, and includes an onsite café offering tempting treats, and plenty of space to explore. We promise the visit will offer many surprizes – and with new themed gardens opening and the seasons always changing you and the little ones will want to come back time and time again.

The Waikato is home to many destination playgrounds, including Hare Puke Park in Hamilton, which was named ‘playground of the year’ in 2019. Kids are bound to love the playground at Hamilton Lake too, and adults will enjoy a coffee at the cafe next door. The new playground on the opposite side of Hamilton Lake at Innes Common features a basketball court and parkour area while playgrounds in other Waikato towns such as Te Awamutu and Cambridge come highly recommended too.
Grabbing an icecream is sure to be a favourite for the whole family. Serving up funky flavours like fairybread and maple, honeycomb and smoked almond there is sure to be something to please all tastebuds at Duck Island Ice cream.
Grab the bikes – The Waikato region has hundreds of kilometres of trails to discover – from mountain bike parks to gentle rides alongside the Waikato River, the city has something suitable for all levels, ages and stages. From beginner cycling experiences at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, through to gentle trails throughout the region – cycling’s a great way to get out more and burn off some energy!
Boon After Dark 2020 features a temporary art installation of illuminated, contemporary structures is set to light up in the wintry nights in the heart of Hamilton. In Garden Place until 9 October, SHROOMS by Amigo and Amigo are giant interactive, immersive and playful installations the whole family will love.
Sky City Hamilton is home to a world-class bowling alley & X-Golf simulator. Activities to keep the whole family entertained for hours, and top that off with some tasty family friendly food and great views of the Waikato River kids big and small will enjoy their time playing together.
