Walk , Ride, Relax!
Just down the road from the Big city, the Mighty Waikato region is an easy drive for a weekend away to walk, ride and relax. Home to a huge range of walking tracks, cycle trails, and MTB parks why don’t you get out and about and explore what’s in the backyard!
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari offers picturesque walking trails through ancient native forest, with a variety of friendly birdlife to spot. Found just out of Cambridge and Te Awamutu, it is the largest inland ecological island in NZ, Sanctuary Mountain is also home to Tuataru, and boasts a canopy viewing tower for a birds-eye-view of the forest.
While you are in Cambridge, take the opportunity to see glowworms from the water – this time by kayak! Head along to Lake District Adventures and explore the Waikato River and Lake Karapiro on a relaxed kayak tour at dusk. Talk to them about the Waikato River Trails – they can help with transfers, bike hire or even a guide!
Cycling in the Waikato covers all ages and stages and rider styles. From the weekend warrior to the hard core cyclist you can ride till your hearts content – or your legs give out! Waikato is home to many trails and MTB Parks in the region. Reward your hard work with some great Waikato food and hospitality.
One of those ‘Must Do’s’. Enjoy an easy stroll along Te Waihou Walkway. Home to the Blue Spring – the walk follows a track alongside the Waihou River just south of Puturaru. The Walkway take you through wetlands, across rolling pastoral land and features views of small waterfalls, native bush and the famous Blue Spring with glimpses of trout along the way. You won’t see water clearer than this! With two access points to the Walkway, you can spend as little or as long as you like.
Grabbing an icecream is sure to be a favourite for the whole family. Serving up funky flavours like fairybread and maple, honeycomb and smoked almond there is sure to be something to please all tastebuds at Duck Island Ice cream.
Boon After Dark 2020 features a temporary art installation of illuminated, contemporary structures is set to light up in the wintry nights in the heart of Hamilton.
